My grandmother believed every home should have a grasshopper in it.
When I moved into my first apartment, she gave me one for good luck. To this day, I still think of her whenever I see them.
Ever since I began painting these small creatures, people have shared all kinds of personal stories with me about what they represent. Luck. Courage. Forward movement. Childhood memories. Comfort. It’s fascinating how certain small creatures quietly gather meaning over the course of a life.
This original painting is part of my Small Guardians collection, inspired by the tiny winged and wandering creatures children notice immediately and adults often rediscover when they need them most.
